On my HTC EVO 4G the Kindle (*.mbp and *.prc) files are in the /sdcard/kindle/ directory.
What I'd suggest is to install the EStrong File explorer application (ES File Explorer) and search for "mbp" and "prc" files. To search using this application, you need to start it and then use the magnifying glass on the tool bar. Once you click on it a pop-up will appear. Instead of using the drop down box, click the check box (Search any file by Name). Enter mbp or prc in the text field and start the search.
Another suggestion is to mount the SD-Card as an USB Drive on your computer. You can then search using one of your computer's search facilities. In my case, I use MS-Windows and Linux, so I open a command / DOS window and search either with the "dir" or 'ls" command. You should search with the method you feel most comfortable using on your computer.
None of the textbooks I looked up/needed are available. Just bought this for my freshman son. I read watched a couple of videos they said they could not find there textboooks either. So, so far don't believe the hype. FYI – all of the textbooks I need have been out for a while and all are very basic books. They are all over the internet for sale used especially at AMAZON, but not for Kindle. Seems like I could have spent the $139 on two or three used books so far its a waste of money.

You obviously have not been keeping up on things. The Slate has NEVER sold well. That is a fact. It never sold well for the same reason that Dell tablet laptops never really sold well. The touch functionality is negligible because at the end of the day, it's really a laptop that is missing the keyboard half, in which again, going with a laptop is the much better move (at the time the MBA's were the lightest full laptops, slightly heavier than an iPad).

The reason there's a Slate 2 is most likely due to contractual agreements with MS (the original Slate was released due to contractual agreements, is more Microsoft's product than HP's, Microsoft gave us our unit, not HP). The device was DOA and even HP didn't want to release it but they were MS main tablet vendor for Windows 7 tablets. There's a reason that HP never produced these things in large volumes (I think for the original Slate, they are still selling their initial stock).
